We are thrilled share Marshall & Brown Dark Rum with you this month.

Marvely & Carlton, the husband-and-wife duo behind the Marshall & Brown brand, travelled the world to discover some of the world’s finest rums. On their travels they gained a deeper understanding of the techniques, processes, sugars, molasses, fruits, and spices that go into making rum. Their newfound knowledge and insight ignited a desire to create an exquisite range of artisan rums. They teamed up with Artisan distiller, Dominic M’Benga, who has taken their vision and expertly distilled their range of premium spiced rums.

Marshall & Brown Dark Rum

Marshall & Brown Dark Rum is a blend of Caribbean rums that has been re-distilled with a complex combination of our secret recipe of botanicals, including tonka beans to give a vanilla hit. It boasts a rich blend of flavours, with notes of molasses, tonka bean, caramel, and exotic fruits coming together in a harmonious complexity. Naud Ron Panama Craft Rum Box for Christmas is a specially selected delicious rum from Panama

with 15 years of aging in American Oak Barrels.

Naud Ron Panama aged 15 years – Rum Box

Christmas is coming and as the song says ‘Time for parties And celebrations, People dancin’ All night long’. To get your party started we have selected a 15 year old Panamanian dark Rum from Naud Ron Panama (Noble and Unusual Distillery). This family distillery opened in 1923 and is well hidden on a small island on the Peninsula de Azuero.

Their art of crafting spirits has been passed down for generations. The rum is distilled in the traditional fashion, in copper columns of 20 trays, to obtain a distinguished, lavish and fruity spirit. After 15 years of aging in American oak casks, the rum starts its journey across the Atlantic to the Charente region in France for a finishing period in cognac cellars.

The Naud Ron Panama 15yo rum is deep mahogany in colour with burnished copper flares. There are tempting aromas of clove and cinnamon, a hint of fruit and a faint grassy freshness. The delicious sweet oak flavour comes through this semi-sweet rum, light vanilla and chocolate box flavours are finished with delicate molasses on the palate

This elegant easy drinking rum can be enjoyed on its own over ice or with a light ginger ale that will not overpower its smooth elegance. We loved the naturally light Lamb and Watt Ginger ale. Fill a tumbler glass with ice and a shot of Naud Ron Panama 15yo rum then add the ginger ale to taste.

J Gow – January’s Box

Happy New Year

With Burns Night on the 25^th January we thought a spiced rum hailing from a small Orkney island would be a great way to start the new year at Craft Rum Club.

Gow Rum takes its name from the infamous Orkney pirate John Gow whose short career started in Amsterdam and ended in Orkney. He was famously hung twice after the rope snapped, the first time, at London’s execution dock on the 11th of June 1725. While the name conjures up images of pirates, it also creates imagery of the brutal seas and rugged coastlines surrounding Orkney.

J Gow spiced rum is produced on Lamb Holm, a tiny island (0.15 square miles) just south of St Mary’s village. Home to an Italian Chapel and connected to mainland Orkney by the Churchill barriers. This may well be one of the smallest rum producing islands and the distillery can be found just metres away from the beach.

The Expressions

The delicate flavours of vanilla and caramel are mixed with natural spices from around the world including two secret ingredients grown in Orkney. There are also subtle citrus and cinnamon notes in this light golden coloured rum which has a smooth sweetness and warming spice finish

Destilerias Arehucas – August’s Box

Destilerias Arehucas, established in 1884, is devoted to the production of a wide range of Rums, Spirits and Liqueurs. The company is most well known for it’s selection of Rums to suit all tastes. The rums are matured in Arehucas’ world renowned 100 year old Rum Cellar, containing more than 6000 American oak casks. These 200 or 400 litre casks either contain a range of Rums, Spirits and Liqueurs of varying age. The Arehucas Golden Rums mature for 1 year, 7 years and 12 years, up to a maximum of 20 years. The most important cask in the cellar is signed by the current King and Queen of Spain. Destilerias Arehucas has the grand title of Royal House Supplier. August’s surprise box of Rum comes from Jamaica and we are both proud to be able to source this rum for the membership.

The Worthy Park Estate is close to where Donna’s mum was born and grew up before emigrating to the UK in 1962.

The Expressions

Rum-Bar Gold Rum is a classic rich Jamaican rum which can be enjoyed mixed or neat. Ideally, rested before sipping as once the alcohol dissipates the sweetness of banana and stewed apples prevails on the nose. The fruit dominates the palate whilst the four aged years enables this rum to benefit from oak interaction, giving a vanilla and treacle like sweetness. A long mellow finish bursting with flavours.

PIMENTO DAIQUIRI is our featured cocktail of the month using the ingredients contained within the box. We really enjoyed putting our take on this drink bringing together the best Pimento to give a taste of Jamaica.

Summer is warming up nicely and with June’s surprise box we have great pleasure to bring you a taste of paradise from the Island of Mauritius.

In June’s box;

The rum’s appearance can be best described as having a golden colour with coppery reflects. When tasting the first nose it’s dominated by jammy fruit (cooked apple and marmalade). The palate is very aromatic melting vanilla and wooden notes with slight hints of pepper. This full-bodied 5 year old rum truly epitomises the spirit of the Indian Ocean. Its strong and attractive personality comes from an original ageing process which associates French Limousin oak barrels and Port barrels. We discovered this rum on a recent trip to the New Grove distillery in Mauritius. After we shared many evenings sipping this on the rocks or mixed with the local sparkling pear drink we wanted to bring it back and share with the club members.

It’s been great fun putting this box together using authentic Mauritian products. The Pearona is not too sweet and is very popular across the island. The Moolkoo reflects the Mauritian Indian culture and the ground nuts are baked in sand before the shell is peeled off. This gives them a unique flavour. Both compliment the rum and these literally came off the plane on Wednesday!

Dear Member,

This month we are really excited to have sourced some of the finest Cachaca Brazil has to offer! Cachaca is also known as Brazilian rum, in case you are wondering what the link is to rum. A double award winner in 2014 this exceptionally crafted spirit and bottle design is a great way to celebrate the longer days and summer vibes. The Yaguara family tradition is to use the services of a professional glass cutter to make the empty bottle into a glass which we think looks pretty dang cool!

We have also teamed up with James White who have some fabulous products. Their Kombucha cordial mixes fantastically well into our cocktail of the month and provides a refreshing rosy tipple with undertones of iced tea and peach. Their strong dilution ratios offer a distinguished identity and as an alternative you can simply serve with water over ice which is a lovely thirst-quenching drink.

The Caribbean, Central and South America are the spiritual home of rum but it is enjoyed all around the world. Interestingly, the first rum-like drinks are recorded in India and China. Modern rum is either from the Caribbean or Latin America and every distillery in every country has its own individual and versatile take on this much-loved spirit. Choosing to buy rum online gives you time and space to explore the wide range of rums available.

Defining Rum

Unlike other spirits and wine, there is no single defined standard for rum. It is a massively varied type of spirit but it is the flavours of the Caribbean that are best known. Each island has a regional style but on a broad basis they can be distinguished by the languages spoken on the isle.

Spanish speaking islands produce rum known as Ron, often lighter in style with flavour emanating from the ageing process. Ron, usually originates from Cuba, Panama, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and other Spanish speaking provinces in the area.

English speaking islands such as Barbados, St Lucia and Jamaica are known for their heavier and higher ester rums. Distilled from molasses using traditional methods, these rums can be darker in appearance with molasses forward flavours.

French speaking islands like Martinique, Haiti and Guadalouple are known for their rhum agricole. Distilled from sugar cane juice, it has a distinctive upfront grassy taste considered by some to be the purest expression of rum.

Naud Ron Panama Craft Rum Box for Christmas is a specially selected delicious rum from Panama
