Island Slice Single Dark Rum Cocktail

Before we dive into why you should top up your glass with this dark beauty, let us indulge you in a bit of a back story to how Island Slice Single Dark Rum came to be.

This rum was developed, on paper, while our founder, Sylvester was thinking about the history of his father’s and forefather’s Rum drinks that date back throughout four generations of rum makers. Well-rounded, laid-back, dark, and mysterious. The perfect partnership combines the 200-year-old taste of St Lucia with flavours from Scotland’s finest specially selected Speyside whisky casks.

Now if St Lucia & Scotland sound like an intriguing mix your taste buds are curious to try, then we suggest a cocktail using our strawberry witch kings syrup, ginger beer, lime juice & ice to pack a punch in the summer heat. Don’t forget the snacks and kick back with some grooves from our DJ of the month music selection.

4 BEST SUMMER RUM COCKTAILS

Rum is quite possibly the most versatile spirit and used to create some of the most delicious cocktails favoured by many discerning drinkers around the world. Make the perfect Cuba Libre to sip on sunny evenings, wow your friends with a Mai Tai or enjoy a Hurricane with your friends and family. You can find a cocktail for every season, every occasion and everyone right here.

Daiquiri

If there is one cocktail that most bartenders acknowledge as the king of rum cocktails, it is the Daiquiri. The simple mix of rum, lime, and sugar is the trinity of ingredients that make up the foundation for many exotic drinks such as the Planters Punch, The Mai Tai and even the Mojito.

The drink was supposedly invented by an American mining engineer named Jennings Cox, who worked in a village called Daiquiri in Cuba at the time of the Spanish American War during the late 1890’s. Originally the drink was served in a tall glass packed with cracked ice. A teaspoon of sugar was poured over the ice and the juice of one or two limes was squeezed over the sugar. Two or three ounces of white rum completed the mixture. The glass was then frosted by stirring with a long-handled spoon. Later the Daiquiri evolved to be mixed in a shaker with the same ingredients but with shaved ice. After a thorough shaking, it was poured into a chilled coupe glass.

Consumption of the drink remained localised until 1909, when a Lucius W. Johnson, a U.S. Navy medical officer, tried Cox’s drink. Johnson subsequently introduced it to the Army and Navy Club in Washington, D.C., and drinkers of the Daiquiri increased over the space of a few decades. During the US prohibition, Americans flocked to Cuba to drink, and the Daiquiri became even more famous. It was one of the favourite drinks of writer Ernest Hemingway and U.S. President John F. Kennedy.

Today the Daiquiri comes in all shapes and sizes, from flavoured to frozen. From straight up, to on the rocks. And whichever way you choose, it should be cold, refreshing, light and easy to drink with a balance of sweet and sour.

Ingredients

50ml Equiano Light or white rum
25ml fresh lime juice
15ml Agave nectar/syrup

Method
Shake all of the ingredients with plenty of ice. Strain into a martini glass or champagne coupe. Garnish with the oils & twist of an orange peel.

Mai Tai

Probably the most well-known Tiki cocktail and favoured by both bartenders and cocktail enthusiasts alike.

Like many cocktail stories there is some controversy over the origins of the Mai Tai. Is the Q.B Punch from Donn Beach – Beachcomber Bar – the base for this cocktail or was

Victor Bergeron – Trader Vic – the creator? It’s no secret that Vic copied Don’s bar and restaurant style which we now know as Tiki so anything is possible, but one thing we know for sure is Trader Vic’s recipe has stood the test of time and it is his recipe that made the Mai Tai popular all around the world.

A fun fact! Awarded a Guinness World record in 2008, the Merchant Hotel in Belfast boasts having sold the most expensive cocktail. The hotel managed to source the very rare 17year old Wray & Nephew rum used in the original Trader Vic’s Mai Tai recipe and sold the decadent tipple for the princely sum of £750. It was a sell-out and according to the hotel, ‘Those lucky enough to sample this cocktail have confirmed that it was worth every penny.’

For this cocktail we’ve gone with a twist on the classic recipe. Unique and quite different however, everyone agrees it works and tastes great!

Ingredients

30ml No Name Spiced Mango Rum

20ml Spiced Gin

20ml Mango juice

10ml Lime juice

10ml Mango syrup

Chilli flakes

Spoonful of mango chutney

A poppadom

A slice of mango

Method

Shake all ingredients with ice and double strain into a champagne flute. Garnish with a slice of mango and a poppadom

Piña Colada

The iconic Piña Colada is the official drink of Puerto Rico, created in 1954 at the Caribe Hotel in San Juan by bartender Ramón “Monchito” Marrero. Piña Colada, meaning strained pineapple, is the most popular rum based cocktail. Who needs a sun-kissed beach to enjoy this delicious creamy cocktail?

Ingredients

60ml Coco Reàl

45ml white rum

60 ml pineapple juice

Method

Combine all ingredients in a blender carafe. Blend until smooth and pour into a hurricane glass. Garnish with a pineapple wedge and cherry.

Rum Old Fashioned

This very old cocktail dates back to the 1880’s and was originally made with bourbon or rye whiskey. The Rum Old Fashioned is a twist on this classic cocktail and some say it has more depth of flavour.

For this cocktail, we wanted to take a classic recipe and upcycle it into the modern day! Of course, we couldn’t just chuck some ice & sugar in, give it a stir, and call it a day. We worked with the Witch Kings to develop a ginger syrup as a replacement for sugar in the original Old Fashioned recipe. Therefore, taking ten minutes to make an Old Fashioned is not necessary for this build, as such a long stir-time is normally to ensure the sugar has fully dissolved. Though the ice must still dilute the spirit appropriately during construction, this is a straightforward and delicious recipe you can use to elevate almost any rum.

Ingredients
50ml Saint James Rhum VSOP or Trash & Treasure
12.5ml Ginger Syrup
Orange peel for garnish

Method

Add all ingredients into a mixing glass with ice and stir until well-chilled.

Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with an orange twist.

*Optional: Add two dashes of bitters

Christmas Rum of the Month – Naud Ron Panama 15yo

Craft Rum Club – Christmas Rum Box Naud Ron Panama 15 years Premium Rum

Naud Ron Panama Craft Rum Box for Christmas is a specially selected delicious rum from Panama

with 15 years of aging in American Oak Barrels.

Naud Ron Panama aged 15 years – Rum Box

Christmas is coming and as the song says ‘Time for parties And celebrations, People dancin’ All night long’.  To get your party started we have selected a 15 year old Panamanian dark Rum from Naud Ron Panama (Noble and Unusual Distillery).  This family distillery opened in 1923 and is well hidden on a small island on the Peninsula de Azuero.

Their art of crafting spirits has been passed down for generations.  The rum is distilled in the traditional fashion, in copper columns of 20 trays, to obtain a distinguished, lavish and fruity spirit.  After 15 years of aging in American oak casks, the rum starts its journey across the Atlantic to the Charente region in France for a finishing period in cognac cellars.

December’s Christmas box from Panama

Naud 15 years – The Expressions

The Naud Ron Panama 15yo rum is deep mahogany in colour with burnished copper flares. There are tempting aromas of clove and cinnamon, a hint of fruit and a faint grassy freshness.  The delicious sweet oak flavour comes through this semi-sweet rum, light vanilla and chocolate box flavours are finished with delicate molasses on the palate

This elegant easy drinking rum can be enjoyed on its own over ice or with a light ginger ale that will not overpower its smooth elegance.   We loved the naturally light Lamb and Watt Ginger ale.  Fill a tumbler glass with ice and a shot of Naud Ron Panama 15yo rum then add the ginger ale to taste.

Wishing you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

We look forward to supplying your next bottling of fine rum.

Rum Club - Craft Rummers Club

Rum delivered to your door

About Craft Rum Club

How did the concept of rum delivered to your door come about – well my passion for rum started when I met my partner Donna 7 years ago. Her family are from Jamaica and spent many nights drinking rum with them and getting to grips with this new culture. There have been a few mornings feeling slightly ‘dusty’ especially a Christmas day I seem to recall!

I have more recently met many people who have been introduced to the many types of rum and have had a whole new world open up to them. Going on a journey of discovery over the past year or so trying the different types of dark, spiced, white, golden or premium rums has fuelled a passion for rum where I want to surprise and educate people to the many rums and the way cultures drink them.

From our passion for rum Craft Rum Club was born and it is an absolute pleasure of ours to serve members with some of the finest rums, great cocktail ideas and simply everything rum delivered to your door.

Kevin & Donna

Black Tears Spiced Rum

Black Tears Spiced Rum – October’s Box

Happy Halloween! ?

October brings a unique rum from Cuba – Black Tears. Described as an emotional blend of Cuban rum and seductive Cuban spices based on the Cuban lifestyle and passion for music and dance. Created using a Silver Dry rum from one of the best distilleries on the island, Black Tears is the first ever ‘dry’ Spiced Cuban Rum on the global market and it is our pleasure having discovered this bottling to bring this to the membership.

The bittersweet taste is what sets apart Black Tears from all other spiced rums, as well as its low sugar content, which is typical for Cuban rum. It is spiced with coffee and cacao (cocoa) which have played a large hand in Cuba’s history and aji dulce (sweet pepper) which is one of the most distinctive flavours in Cuban cuisine.

In October’s box;

Black Tears Spiced Rum – 70cl/40% alc./vol

2x 3Cents Aegean Tonic – 200ml

Black Cat Honey Spiced rum

The Black Cat Honey Spiced rum

With September being apple season, this month’s surprise box pays homage to apples.  We have sourced The Black Cat Honey Spiced rum from Courtneys, a small family run business, who are passionate about everything ‘Apple’ and have diversified into the world of spirits.

As the saying goes, black cats are a bad omen but has superstition been erased with this delicious spiced rum?  The Black Cat Honey Spiced rum is a Guyanese rum infused with Courtneys own honey, taken from their hives (populated with rescue bees) on Black Cat Bridge Exmoor, hence the name.

In September’s box;

The Black Cat Honey Spiced Rum – 70cl/35% alc./vol

1x Courtneys Apple and Ginger Juice – 330ml

1x Courtneys – Whimple Orchards Cider 500ml

1x Burts Firecracker Lobster crisp – 40g

1x BeeBom

The Expressions

The Black Cat Honey Spiced rum is punchy but warming.  An alluring, flavoursome spiced rum teamed with mixed spices and infused with a sweet frahttps://clientview.mo-am.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/unnamed-2-1.jpg honey.  The result is a warm, magical taste of Devon.

September is about apples, so we decided on two different pairings which we know you will enjoy.  At Courtneys orchard, everything is natural, their trees aren’t sprayed and nor do they use fertilisers, instead they allow nature to take its course.  Their apples are grown, picked, pressed and bottled onsite in their orchard. You can’t get fresher!  Courtneys Apple and Ginger juice is made to order and we feel is one of the nicest apple juices we have sampled.  Then comes a Courtneys traditional cider, yes it doesn’t sound like it will work but it really does and is surprisingly good.  Both drinks really complement the rum and we feel Courtneys have come up with a great formula to link their drinks together.  The Black Cat Honey Spiced rum is also great served over ice.  Don’t forget to enjoy your tipple with the wonderful Burts Lobster Firecracker crisp.  Lastly, let’s help our Bee population by planting the beebom in a place in need of colour so our bees can enjoy the nectar rich flowers they love.

We look forward to supplying your next bottling of fine rum.
