Matugga Rum - Buy Online

Matugga Rum – May’s Box

Spring is here and for May we have sourced a beautiful Spiced Rum from Matugga. The rum is made with molasses from sugar canes grown in the rich, red soil of East Africa, and has been distilled in the UK since 2015 winning New York wine and spirit Silver award.

Matugga Spirits are carefully crafted in the U.K. through small-batch copper pot distillation. Their proud heritage combined with playful innovation has produced a tipple which is adventurous and captures the unique flavours of Africa.

We hope you agree that Matugga is both a journey, and the destination! The distillers are now based in Scotland and have a very carefully crafted product range. Back in 2017 we featured their golden rum which was a fantastic success and is still winning awards and obtaining great reviews.

In May’s box;

Matugga Spiced Rum – 70cl/42% alc./vol

Fentimens natural ginger ale – 150ml

1x fresh lime

The Expressions

On the nose one can sense hot spice with a touch of ginger, cumin, cardamom seed. Underneath there is sweetness and a hint of what’s to come. On the palate black tea is prominent and joined by a surprising kick of bonfire smoke and mustard seed. A subtle honey flavour builds in the background aligning the sweetness from the nose. The finish sees some big flavours come through from cedar, crunchy brown sugar, smokey tea and black liquorice.

We adore this rum neat or served over ice mixed with Fentimans ginger ale and  a slice of fresh lime.

We look forward to supplying your next bottling of fine rum.

Cheers,

Yaguara Ouro aged Rum

Yaguara Ouro aged Rum – March box

With March being the month of the Rio carnival, we thought it timely to showcase a Brazilian rum, Yaguara Ouro.  Yaguara have been producing small batch artisanal cachaça for five generations and the Ouro is the first aged rum from this distiller

Master blender Erwin Weimann has successfully delivered a smoother, more refined cachaça whilst managing to retain its distinctive taste thanks to creativity and a little science.  It is a blend of fresh sugarcane distillate, aged in three types of wood, Brazilian Amburana and Cambreúva, and American oak.

In March’s box;

Yaguara Ouro aged Rum 70cl – 42% alc./vol

x3 Fresh Limes

x3 Fairtrade Brown Sugar Sticks

Biscoito de Polvilho Brazillian Cheese Snack

The Expressions

This organic pale golden colour Cachaça has soft and creamy vanilla hints followed by a burst of intense earthy sugar cane notes.  Exotic spice and hints of chamomile round off this characterful, mellow and distinctive cachaça.  It can be enjoyed on its own or in cocktails, try a traditional Caipirinha:

50ml Yaguara Ouro Cachaça

Half a fresh lime

X2 teaspoons demerara sugar

Method: Place lime and sugar into a tumbler and mash the two ingredients together using a muddler or wooden spoon. Fill the tumbler with crushed ice and add the Cachaça. Garnish with the remaining lime.

We look forward to supplying your next bottling of fine rum.

J Gow 70cl - 40% alc.:vol

J Gow – January’s Box

Happy New Year

With Burns Night on the 25th January we thought a spiced rum hailing from a small Orkney island would be a great way to start the new year at Craft Rum Club.

  1. Gow Rum takes its name from the infamous Orkney pirate John Gow whose short career started in Amsterdam and ended in Orkney. He was famously hung twice after the rope snapped, the first time, at London’s execution dock on the 11th of June 1725. While the name conjures up images of pirates, it also creates imagery of the brutal seas and rugged coastlines surrounding Orkney.

J Gow spiced rum is produced on Lamb Holm, a tiny island (0.15 square miles) just south of St Mary’s village. Home to an Italian Chapel and connected to mainland Orkney by the Churchill barriers. This may well be one of the smallest rum producing islands and the distillery can be found just metres away from the beach.

In Januarys box;

J Gow 70cl – 40% alc./vol

Angostura Bitters – 66.7% alc./vol – x2

Britvic Cranberry Juice drink 200ml – x2

The Expressions

The delicate flavours of vanilla and caramel are mixed with natural spices from around the world including two secret ingredients grown in Orkney. There are also subtle citrus and cinnamon notes in this light golden coloured rum which has a smooth sweetness and warming spice finish

The versatility of the prominent rum flavour complimented with spices means you can enjoy this rum in many ways from on the rocks to cocktails or even just your favourite mixer

World’s End Navy 57 – 57% alc./70cl

Flamboyant Vieux Rhum - Buy Online

Flamboyant Vieux Rhum – February’s Box

Flamboyant Vieux Rhum

In February’s surprise box of rum and continuing to explore agricole rhums, we have sourced a unique product from Mauritius – Flamboyant Vieux Rhum.  This blended rum is aged for up to seven years in used Bourbon oak casks. Golden in colour due to oak maturation, the rum has no artificially added colours. This is a fantastic sipping rum with a big, smooth, well-rounded nose and palate. Unfortunately, there is no promotional material available from the distillery, but we think it speaks for itself.  On the front of the bottle is a picture of the tree ‘Flamboyant’ whose flower is the national flower of Mauritius. Flamboyant comes into flower during the time of independence in March when the trees lining the sides of the roads in great avenues are ablaze with brilliant red colour.

Mauritius is a relative newcomer to global rum markets. For centuries, colonial governments in Mauritius frowned on using sugar cane for rum, because refined sugar fetched much better profits. Until 2006, Mauritius produced only small amounts of rum from molasses. The government then lifted a ban on distilling from sugar cane juice to produce agricole rum. The lifting of the ban has brought in new players, and encouraged older operations to diversify.

In February’s rum box;

FLAMBOYANT VIEUX RHUM 70cl – 40% alc./vol

PEARONA Sparkling pear drink 33cl x2

PLUIE d’OREE Ti Pois chilli 100g

AH PING Cravatte Sale 150g

The Expressions

Flamboyant Vieux Rhum is a golden yellow with a bright clear appearance. On the nose you can pick out complex notes such as biscuit, cake, raisin, banana cake, vanilla, cinnamon and a touch of orange zest. Tasting the Rhum leaves you with a dry sense with a subtle touch of burnt fruit, raisin and almost a coffee note.

Flamboyant Rhum brings a small touch of Mauritian life to the UK. Mix with crushed ice and Pearona to taste in a highball glass and experience the local drink of choice.

Tasting Notes

On the nose we have fine oaked deep fruit cake, with raisins and sultanas abounding. The palate is full of slightly honeyed cracked caramel with a hint of Szechuan peppers and bay, finishing with vanilla, strawberry and a rich treacle.

Please find tasting notes of the apple juice and apple for garnish (the pictures where taken when we collected the apples for the farm.).

Egremont Russet

Introduced in 1880. Prized as the most delicious of the English russets. Golden brown fruit. Often with black spots or markings. Greenish-yellow and richly flavoured. It has a very distinctive flesh, often described as nutty. Like all russets, it is a good keeper.

Laxton Fortune (For garnish)

Developed by the Laxton Brothers Nursery in the early 1900s. It’s still grown commercially on a small scale. It remains a popular garden variety in the UK, but is a noted biennial bearer.  It is a useful substitute for Cox’s Orange Pippin (one of its parents), having some of the aromatic flavour of that variety but much easier to grow.

The Expressions

Rum-Bar Gold Rum is a classic rich Jamaican rum which can be enjoyed mixed or neat. Ideally, rested before sipping as once the alcohol dissipates the sweetness of banana and stewed apples prevails on the nose. The fruit dominates the palate whilst the four aged years enables this rum to benefit from oak interaction, giving a vanilla and treacle like sweetness. A long mellow finish bursting with flavours.

PIMENTO DAIQUIRI is our featured cocktail of the month using the ingredients contained within the box. We really enjoyed putting our take on this drink bringing together the best Pimento to give a taste of Jamaica.
