April’s Surprise Box of Spiced Rum Featuring Flat Cap Rum Cherry & Vanilla Spiced Rum

Authentic And Flavoursome

The name Flat Cap is paying homage to our late father who travelled from Jamaica in the early 1950’s to start a new life in the United Kingdom specifically south London and was known for wearing a Flat Cap! We are honoured to bare the Flat Cap symbol in our logo and our name. Billy Balton Mckitty 1936 – 2015.

After tasting Rums from most parts of the Caribbean we decided to build upon traditional spirits, we create new flavours to bring you exciting rum. Also seeing that the majority of household name rums were more legacy products that people purchased out of habit, Flat Cap Drinks wanted to add value and alternative products to what was being consumed in the marketplace.

Our rums are distilled in the traditional and authentic manner, the stills are all handmade and hand beaten copper (not a Colum still). This choice allows the rum to have the most amount of contact with the copper which in turn provides the best quality product for you to enjoy and makes our rums honest, authentic and flavoursome.

After distillation the flavour recipe is added and left to infuse for 5-7 days in oak barrels as this helps to provide that great smooth palate excitement, and aids with the colour of the rum making it attractive to the eye.

The Cuban rum brand RON SANTIAGO DE CUBA is delighted to announce the appointment of Antonio Naranjo as the new Global Brand Ambassador. Antonio is a two-time winner of World Class Bartender of the Year (Spain and Norway). He was also the co-founder and creator of the concept of a World’s 50 Best Bars 2019, Dr Stravinsky and he owns the recently opened Especiarium Bar and Quentin’s American Bar in Palma de Mallorca. Added to his experience in running successful world-leading bars, his passion for and understanding of the Cuban rum category is unparalleled.

March’s Surprise Box of Spiced Rum Featuring A. H. Riise Black Barrel

Created In Honor Of The Danish Royal Navy

Black Barrel Spiced Rum 40% is a part of the Royal Danish Navy series and created to honor their proud history. Combining the history of the world’s oldest navy academy with the 15th century’s proud barrel-charring traditions we get the Black Barrel 40%. By burning the barrels, the result is a dark blend with complex notes. These notes are not from the charred wood, but from the wood behind which had been opened with the heat. Black as the night and spiced according to an ancient secret recipe Black Barrel’s character and color lives completely up to its name. 

Nose:
Mocha, walnuts, burnt figs and lightly burnt notes of oak
Palette: 
Christmas spices and dark chocolate unite in a deep, rich taste.
Finish:
The mocha taste returns and tones out gradually

In June 1838, the Danish Government officially appointed Albert Heinrich Riise as the exclusive pharmacist for the island of Saint Thomas, in the Caribbean, and granted him monopoly status to produce alcohol in his pharmacy. Initially, Albert developed rum and bitters as medicine for stomach ills. However, his rum soon gained in popularity beyond its medical function, and in 1893 The A.H. Riise Company received its first international recognition at the World Exhibition in Chicago.

Today A.H. Riise is history distilled. In every bottle and every drop. Every bottle is a celebration of the accomplishments of the past – and a promise of new adventures.

To understand the world of Ron Abuelo, you have to step into Pesé, our luscious and fertile landscape, full of tradition and history. With temperatures ranging from 25ºC to 32ºC and humidity between 75% and 100%, the Pesé Valley is the ideal place for growing our sugarcane. We harvest over 1,600 hectares a year, fermenting both sugarcane juice and molasses for 48 hours using the “Pineapple” yeast to achieve the perfect profiles for our rums. 

“Ron Abuelo 12 Años” is an exquisitely rounded rum with timeless quality, and 12 years of exceptional character. Aged first in white oak barrels hand selected by Ron Abuelo’s coopers, the alcoholic strength is then masterfully reduced in cask for a refined flavour with a distinctive depth. This profound and dark amber Gran Reserva boasts an aroma with notes of cocoa, dried prune, toasted wood, and nuts.

February’s Surprise Box of Craft Rum Featuring J. Gow Revenge Rum

Probably the smallest rum producing island in the world

J. Gow rum is named after Orkneys very own 18th century pirate John Gow. J. Gow Rum distillery sits metres away from the sea on Lamb Holm, a 0.15 square mile uninhabited island. Which makes it probably the smallest rum producing island in the world. John Gow’s short, violent career began in Amsterdam in the Netherlands and ended in Orkney. He was imprisoned, tried and hanged. Not once, but twice, (after the rope snapped the first time) at London’s execution dock on the 11th of June 1725. He was one of the last pirates hanged in London. 
After re-joining the family business in 2013. Collin worked several years for the Orkney Wine Company (making fruit wines). With his dad ultimately priming him to take over the business. Instead of taking over the business he took over half of the building, installed a 2000L pot still and started making rum in 2017. 
Revenge is a 3 year old pure single Scottish rum, launched in April 2021. Aged in ex-bourbon and virgin oak casks for three years. 
J. Gow Rum’s house style is heavy and full-bodied, and Revenge is no exception. Light funk, acidic fruit and caramel on the nose. Stone fruit, spice and toffee on the palate with over ripe peaches on the finish. A rich and deeply flavoured rum with no added sugar, artificial flavours or colourings.

February’s Surprise Box of Spiced Rum Featuring Sugar House Scotch Bonnet Spiced Rum

Infused with tropical fruits and Scotch Bonnet Pepper for that extra kick

Sugar House rum takes inspiration for its name from the original 17th Century rum producers of Scotland, the Glasgow Sugar Houses. There were four Sugar Houses in total that refined the imported sugar from the West Indies to sell to local merchants. They also figured out that they could make use of the molasses by-product from the sugar refining process to make rum, so there was rum being made in Scotland as far back as 1676!
Sugar House rum is produced at Strathleven Distillery, which is located in Dumbarton, not far outside of Glasgow.
Their rum is made from scratch using a premium grade of cane molasses, distiller’s yeast, Scottish water and their own blend of nutrients. Sugar House’s third addition to their line-up is a Scotch Bonnet spiced rum which again uses the same base but at 47% is infused with tropical fruits and Scotch Bonnet Chilli’s for that extra kick.

ON THE NOSE
“Neptune Caribbean Spiced is a blend of Caribbean rums, spiced with a carnival of aromas & flavours from the tropics. The sweet smells of passion fruit , cinnamon, vanilla and Persian lime dominate this spiced rum giving it a citrusy edge”.

ON THE PALATE
“Unlike many spiced rums, this rum does not have sugar added, so is not sticky or cloying on the palate. It is light bodied with a subtle taste of tropical fruits such as passion fruit & lime, with a balance of vanilla, caramel and warm fudge”.

THE FINISH
“The end of this spiced rum is surprisingly dry, but welcomed as the array of fruit and spices blended with several Caribbean rums work pleasantly together. The lighter rums from Trinidad & Dominican Republic are complimented with fuller bodied rums from Barbados & Jamaica, thus create a richer finish to the spiced rum that with help carry its flavours in various mixed drinks & cocktails”.

Black Tot Jan box of rum

January’s Surprise Box of Craft Rum Featuring Black Tot Finest Caribbean

Black Tot Finest Caribbean – 46.2% ABV

A few years after releasing Black Tot Last Consignment, the question became – what do we do when the rum runs out? Rather than try to copy Last Consignment, they decided to reboot the blend completely – what would the Navy drink if they were having a tot blended for them today? They experimented with different countries and flavours until they settled on a combination of Barbados, Guyana, and Jamaica. Each country lends different flavour notes to the blend – Barbados is fruity and tropical with beautiful vanilla and coconut notes, the Guyana rum brings a coffee and cacao richness to the blend, with the Jamaica providing that quintessential funk, banana, and spice on the end. Bottled at 46.2%, there is enough alcohol there to shine through in cocktails and it also makes for a delicious sipper when drinking neat.

Tasting Notes

Nose | The copper-coloured liquid is immediately inviting, with tropical breezes of pineapple, melon and a feast of Caribbean sweets. Thick scents of banana fritters, plantain tarts, overripe mango and crème brûlée are lifted by fresh honeysuckle blossom and eucalyptus.

Palate | Rounded and rich, with butter toffee, banana cream, and caramel to start. Gentle cinnamon and allspice build with more fruit – baked apples, pineapple cubes, and dried mango – joined by coffee, dark chocolate, and black pepper.

Finish | Chocolatey coffee fades, leaving roasted bananas and a tingle of anise.

November’s Surprise Spiced Rum Box Features the 45 Scottish Spiced Rum from Jacobite Spirits Co

Spirit Of The Rebellion

Their Glasgow start-up craft distillery was launched in 2020 by a group of eight friends. 

They make their rum from scratch with molasses, a by-product of sugar production. The 45 is a strong, robust spiced rum (45% ABV) with a warming and subtle taste profile. It blends international spices and Scottish botanicals, with hints of ginger, vanilla, caramel, orange peel, liquorice, and smoked seaweed.

Its flavour profile makes it perfect to drink neat, or with a robust mixer such as ginger beer or ginger ale. It also works well in cocktails. 

On the nose, the citrus hits immediately, with the sweetness of the molasses really complementing it. In terms of taste, it is bold, packed full of flavour, and it really hits your senses. Yet more orange flavour comes through, but it is different to the aroma – it’s like the centre of Jaffa cakes. Vanilla and a hint of aniseed lift the spice profile. Its long finish delivers a little heat with the soothing warmth of burnt sugar and the reassuring oak from our casks. There is a slightly smoky finish with a lingering liquorice that pleases and lasts.
