Smith & Cross packs a punch with all the notes associated with higher ester rums – Smith and Cross Rum and the Jamaican Funk.

Jamaican Funk – The Expressions

SMITH & CROSS is a traditional Jamaican rum that represents the distinctively flavourful and aromatic style that made Jamaican rum famous – the Jamaican Funk.

Containing only heavier bodied Wedderburn and medium-bodied Plummer pot still distillates. These are famous for their notes of exotic fruits and spice. This rum is fermented using a local strain of yeast indigenous to Jamaica. Smith & Cross delivers a tour de force of flavour and complexity that historically made Jamaica Rum a cornerstone of many classic drinks. A blend of approximately equal parts Wedderburn and Plummer, the former aged for less than a year, and the latter blended from rums aged between 18 months and 3 years in white oak barrels.

Jamaican Funk – Tasting Notes

The nose is extremely aromatic and pungent with hints of alcohol that you would expect from this 57% ABV Jamaican pot still rum. Pineapple and ripe banana combine with more intense notes of tobacco, cocoa, cloves, cinnamon and spice to give a very intense nose.

Jamaican Rum is famous for producing a real burst of flavour as it hits your tongue. It is tantalised by the high alcohol and intensity of the pot still distillates. Initially sweet, sugar and caramel notes dominate, this sweetness then gives way to the intense fruit notes from the nose. These notes develop the character of prunes, sultanas and caramelised orange peel before more leathery, spicy, vanilla and tobacco notes take over. A long, long, warming finish driven by the high alcohol, sweet and spiciness.

William George –The Expressions

William George is a blend of six rums. Four of those six are sourced from Jamaica, while the other two are sourced from Trinidad & Tobago. One of the rums from Trinidad & Tobago is aged 2-5 years in ‘once used’ 200 litre ex Bourbon Barrels and then carbon filtered to remove colour. The remaining five rums in the blend are un-aged. All the rums sourced from Jamaica are pot distilled while the rums from Trinidad & Tobago are distilled using multi-column. Spice Hunter – The Expressions

Spice Hunter Rum packs a bold flavour punch. 13 exotic spices have been expertly blended with a premium Mauritian rum from the Medine distillery.  The base rum is distilled in Mauritius from single-estate sugar cane and aged on the estate for a more complex and richer flavour.

Tasting Notes from Berry Bros & Rudd

The combination of spices and aged rum produces a bold yet balanced taste for a rum that doesn’t get lost in the mix. Intense notes of ginger, cloves and nutmeg give way to a lingering spicy finish. With a perfumed nose full of musk and exoticism, this rum charms and entices with equal measure. Pink peppercorn, vanilla, waxed apple skin and rosehip crowd the nose, while the palate affords floral tea, beeswax and glacé cherries. Joyously, this isn’t too unctuous, with no excess sweetness beyond a supple fleshiness to balance the spice. It just cries out for a wedge of orange and lashings of ginger beer or cola, for a refreshing salve any night of the week.

Craft Rum Box April’s Rum of the Month – Companero Extra Anejo

Craft Rum Club – April’s Rum of the month is Companero Ron from Panama

Companero Ron Panama Extra Anejo Craft Rum Box for April is a specially selected delicious Chocolate infused rum.

Spring is here, Easter is around the corner and our ‘rum journey’ takes us to Panama this month for a delicious chocolate infused rum.  When we stumbled across this rich dark juice, matured for 12 years in ex-bourbon barrels we knew we had found the perfect Easter rum.  Panama’s unique climate lends itself to producing good rums.  The stable temperature and humidity around the city of Pesé enables the precise calculation of the evolution of the rum as it ages.

Wondering why there is such an intense chocolate hue?  The rum is taken out of the barrel, cocoa beans are added to the barrels and toasted within them.  The rum is then put back into the barrels to age for a further 9 months.  The high ABV cuts through the intensity of the cocoa to deliver a smooth creamy finish.

In Aprils box;

Companero Ron Panama Extra Anejo – 70cl/54%  alc./vol

X2 Union Cold Brew Sparkling Black Coffee – 250ml

Fairfields Farm Sweet Chilli Crisp – 40g

Nim’s Orange Infusions Slices

(snacks may contain traces of nuts and other allergens – please check before consuming)

Companero Ron Expressions

The 54% ABV is hidden in the chocolate rum notes which brings warmth to this 12-year-old Panama rum.  Heavy dark chocolate on the nose with hints of citrus which follow through to the palate.  Great in cocktails and served on its own over ice, we feel this is an exceptional rum and hope you will agree.  We particularly liked how well this rum works with Union’s sparkling cold brew coffee.  This sophisticated delicately sparkling soda hits the spot for coffee lovers – a chocolate infused rum

Pour 30ml Companero Rum into a highball glass over ice, add 50ml Union cold brew sparkling coffee (preferably fridge cold) and add Nim’s Orange slice to garnish. Gently muddle to allow the orange to infuse into the pour, sit back and savour your stylish Easter cocktail whilst nibbling Fairfields Farm sweet chili crisp.

We look forward to supplying your next bottling of fine rum.

Craft Rum Box March’s Rum of the Month – Magnifica Envelhecida Cachaça

Craft Rum Club – Brazil’s March’s Rum of the month is Magnifica Envelhecida a deliciously aged Cachaca.

Magnifica is a Cachca for March’s Craft Rum Box specially selected rum from Brazil in the hills around Rio.

In the true style of Brazil and in celebration of the Rio Carnival which was first staged in 1723 we have sourced a beautiful Cachaça.  Magnifica Envelhecida which is produced in the Fazenda do Anil (Indigo Estate), 110 kms from Rio de Janeiro, on the border between the municipalities of Vassouras and Miguel Pereira.  The estate is located at an altitude of 800m above sea level, in a region of exceptional weather, with the purest air and water.  All sugar cane used to produce Cachaça Magnifica is grown on the estate grounds.

The fresh cane juice is then fermented with local native yeasts and is distilled in triple copper pot stills. This is a totally unique distillation system in Brazil, guaranteeing the best possible selection of alcohols. Oak barrels are then utilised for the aging of Magnifica Envelhecida for a minimum of 2 years.

 In March’s Brazil box;

Magnifica Envelhecida Cachaca – 70cl/43%  alc./vol

Casa de Bento Suco de Uva – 295ml

Guarana Antartica – 33ml

Vale do Prata, Salgadinhos – 120g

Aritana Pipoca – 40g

Moreninha do Rio – 22g

X3 Limes

Coconut sweets traditionally wrapped

(snacks may contain peanuts and other nut allergies – please check before consuming)

Magnifica Expressions – a taste of Rio

Brazil Magnifica Envelhecida has a golden colour from the aging process and a nice floral aroma with subtle grassy notes coming from the freshly cut cane. The smooth palate is surprising and can be easily sipped. It can be enjoyed straight, on ice or in Brazil’s national cocktail, Caipirinha.  Slice the lime in half and chop into half inch rounds. Add 2 sachets of sugar, muddle in a high ball glass with a couple of ice cubes. Add x2 shots of Cachaca and stir. Sit back and enjoy with the authentic delicious selection of Brazilian snacks.

Magnifica also combines particularly well with the naturel grape juice Casa de Bento and the Guarana Antartica drinks. Pour a shot of Cachaca over ice and add two shots of your preferred mixer, stir (add more cachaca/grape juice to taste).

Craft Rum Box February’s Rum of the Month – Clifton Estate from the Island of Nevis

Craft Rum Club – Febuary’s Spiced Rum of the month is Clifton Estate

February’s Craft Rum Box is specially a hand crafted selected Rum from the Island of Nevis

February’s small batch artisanal rum produced by Mark Theron comes from the Caribbean Island of Nevis. Only natural ingredients are used to infuse flavour into this multi award-winning spiced rum. There are no artificial flavourings or oils used in any part of the distilling process – Clifton Estate is a truly hand crafted spiced rum.

The base rum is from Antigua and aged in oak casks for 2+ years giving the pour a bright orange brown colour. The rum is then transferred into the maturation tanks (which are glass) and secret real island spices are added which also contribute to the distinctive colour found in Clifton Estate rum.

In February’s box;

Clifton Estate Nevis Spiced Rum – 50cl/40% vol

X2 Grace Coconut Water – 310ml

X1 Grace Paprika Plantain Chips – 85g

Clifton Estate Spiced Rum – The Expressions

Swirling the rum around in a sipping glass see’s great thick legs (the addition of honey holds them up) and aromas of cinnamon.

The expertise of the distiller shines through with subtle flavours of orange zest, honey, cinnamon, clove and nutmeg landing on the palette. The body is medium ending towards heavyweight with the addition of honey. This does not affect the feel of the spirit as it is so well rounded. There is a considerable long finish when sipping which pushes this spiced rum firmly into the premium category. The painstaking distilling process and infusion of Mark Theron’s secret spices from the Island of Nevis has paid off creating in our view a unique craft rum – the Clifton Estate.

We would recommend trying Clifton Estate on its own in a sipping glass to savour its qualities. For a great pairing add a shot over ice in a highball glass and pour Grace’s coconut water to taste. Sit back and enjoy Grace’s paprika plantain chips for those warm Caribbean vibes.

We look forward to supplying your next bottling of fine rum.

Craft Rum Box January’s Rum of the Month – Damoiseau Gold, Guadaloupe

Craft Rum Club – January’s Rum of the month is Damoiseau Gold

Damoiseau Gold Craft Rum Box for January is a specially selected delicious rum from the topical Island of Guadeloupe.

For the start of 2020 we are delighted to have sourced an Agricole Rhum from the island of Guadeloupe – Damoiseau Gold.  The estate was established at the end of the 19th Century by a Mr Rimbaud from Martinique. In April 1942 Roger Damoiseau Senior acquired the site and it has remained within the Damoiseau family thereafter. The estate and distillery are currently run by Hervé Damoiseau.

Damoiseau Rhum Gold is produced from the fresh sugarcane juice in Guadeloupe, and then spends 18 months in oak barrels. This imparts the delicate golden hue and complex oak flavours into this Agricole.

Damoiseau rums are the market leader in Guadeloupe, with a 50% market share. They also have a presence on the market in mainland France and export to more than 40 countries.

In January’s Guadeloupe box;

Damoiseau Gold – 70cl/40%  alc./vol

2x 3 Cents Gentlemans Soda – 200ml

1x The French Kitchen French Sea Salt Crisp – 40g

Damoiseau Gold – Expressions

From the nose, you can detect a typical sugarcane sweetness alongside a slight fresh grassiness. Onto the palette there are warming notes of vanilla and cinnamon with a subtle oak finish which is where the rhum has aged.

We stumbled across The French Kitchen crisp whilst on a rare child free night out.  These moorish crisp are hand cooked in sunflower oil in small batches and seasoned to perfection with natural ingredients.   Enjoy this rum with the 3cents gentleman’s soda whilst nibbling on the French Kitchens crisp. Add ice to a high ball glass, pour two shots of Damoiseau Gold and soda to taste. Sit back and enjoy the start of the new year!

We look forward to supplying your next bottling of fine rum.
