Tasting notes:

On the nose, SAINT OGUN is a lift of tropical fruit notes, strong in pineapple, banana and apricot, with a mild sweetness that is coated in wisps of light oak.

Jackdaw Cave – The taste of adventure

May’s Spiced Rum from Jackdaw Cave creates a taste of adventure!

Jackdaw Cave Spiced Rum is a product born out of both: a passion by Far Shore Merchants for developing outstanding artisan rums and precision distilling with the finest ingredients. Inspired by an old smugglers’ cave hidden in a jagged cove on the rugged coast of the Isle of Man  – complete with a hole in the roof to lower illicit cargo into waiting boats below – Jackdaw Cave is a celebration of the romance, intrigue and excitement of the early days of rum trading. 

Tasting notes;
With warming notes of vanilla, orange, and caramel, undertones of exotic spices such as nutmeg and cinnamon, plus hints of coffee, ginger, and pepper, this fragrantly flavoured rum was created to both satisfy connoisseurs and attract new drinkers to the market.

Jackdaw Cave is distilled from scratch by the hugely talented Tom Read of The Cornish Distilling Company. Using unique recipes, grade A molasses and the best ingredients available, the distillation process is carefully controlled from fermentation to ageing to ensure the rums are rich, flavourful, and easy to drink.

In the case of Jackdaw Cave, the secret is to add the spices whilst the rum is at 60% ABV, when it is left to macerate for a few weeks, so the alcohol has time to extract all these flavours. It is then sweetened with raw cane sugar before Cornish spring water drops the ABV to 37.5%.

A gold medal winner in The Spirits Business Design and Packaging Awards 2021, Jackdaw Cave is also a silver medal winner in The Spirits Business Rum & Cachaça Masters 2022 for taste.

May’s Surprise Box of Craft Rum Featuring The Two Drifters Signature Rum

CARBON NEGATIVE RUM

May’s craft rum is here and is an exclusive 1st release for our members from the Two Drifters distillery showcasing their new Two Drifters Signature Rum.

The distillery founders Gemma and Russ Wakeham have over the years experimented with many parts of the rum making process to find ‘their flavour’, and the new profile marries perfectly with orange. The gentle flavours of orange peel and burnt sugar that come from the Madeira casks is a match made in Devon! 

Until now, the Two Drifters Signature Rum has been a Pot Still Rum, diluted to 40% abv and then coloured with burnt sugar. It wasn’t for the purest but Two Drifters we’re only three years old and do not buy in rum, so they couldn’t just bottle a cask rum from the start. This rum showcases what is to come from Two Drifters and going forward the Two Drifters Signature Rum will always be made using Madeira casks. 

Two Drifters have an amazing new look since showcasing their Spiced Rum in 2020. They have awards, are exporting to over 12 countries, are on the shelves of renowned British stores and served in some of the best bars, have awesome employees and are B Corp Certified. So far Two Drifters have removed over 16 tonnes of CO2 permanently from the air with their carbon negative footprint. Fantastic story and a great read in #rumspiration_magazine

Now you can watch us on YouTube. Since introducing monthly Meet The Maker events at the beginning of 2021 we have been exploring how we can enhance your experience. So we flicked through our rolodex of contacts and landed on Steve The Barman – ‘a lairy Bartender of 27 years, we found on YouTube, who likes Rum’. With Steve there are no right or wrong questions so we know he will bring the right mix of fun and knowledge when hosting our rum partners, unboxing our surprise rums and re-creating our cocktails of the month.

Steve tells us ‘Covid was interesting for him!’ Transitioning his Business from In-Person Events, being the UK’s No1* Hen Party Cocktail Masterclass entertainer, to YouTuber! He’s been uploading consistently to YouTube since 2017. But that very first weekend of Lockdown 1.0, his Channel exploded, ‘now my claim to fame is the most viewed Pornstar Martini person on the interwebs!’ And now he generates in excess of 350,000 views a month over his 5 Channels.

In Summer 2021, Steve decided to niche his main YouTube Channel and focus on his True Passion. RUM. He says ‘I wanted to embark on a Rum journey and take as many people along for the ride as possible. Focusing on Rums under £50! And that is what his YouTube Channel is now. Rum. (and Spiced Rums…but mainly proper Rum)’.

Authentic And Flavoursome

The name Flat Cap is paying homage to our late father who travelled from Jamaica in the early 1950’s to start a new life in the United Kingdom specifically south London and was known for wearing a Flat Cap! We are honoured to bare the Flat Cap symbol in our logo and our name. Billy Balton Mckitty 1936 – 2015.

After tasting Rums from most parts of the Caribbean we decided to build upon traditional spirits, we create new flavours to bring you exciting rum. Also seeing that the majority of household name rums were more legacy products that people purchased out of habit, Flat Cap Drinks wanted to add value and alternative products to what was being consumed in the marketplace.

Our rums are distilled in the traditional and authentic manner, the stills are all handmade and hand beaten copper (not a Colum still). This choice allows the rum to have the most amount of contact with the copper which in turn provides the best quality product for you to enjoy and makes our rums honest, authentic and flavoursome.

After distillation the flavour recipe is added and left to infuse for 5-7 days in oak barrels as this helps to provide that great smooth palate excitement, and aids with the colour of the rum making it attractive to the eye.

Only a handful of rum makers in the world are over 150 years old. The Cuban rum brand RON SANTIAGO DE CUBA is delighted to announce the appointment of Antonio Naranjo as the new Global Brand Ambassador. Antonio is a two-time winner of World Class Bartender of the Year (Spain and Norway). He was also the co-founder and creator of the concept of a World’s 50 Best Bars 2019, Dr Stravinsky and he owns the recently opened Especiarium Bar and Quentin’s American Bar in Palma de Mallorca. Added to his experience in running successful world-leading bars, his passion for and understanding of the Cuban rum category is unparalleled.

March’s Surprise Box of Spiced Rum Featuring A. H. Riise Black Barrel

Created In Honor Of The Danish Royal Navy

Black Barrel Spiced Rum 40% is a part of the Royal Danish Navy series and created to honor their proud history. Combining the history of the world’s oldest navy academy with the 15th century’s proud barrel-charring traditions we get the Black Barrel 40%. By burning the barrels, the result is a dark blend with complex notes. These notes are not from the charred wood, but from the wood behind which had been opened with the heat. Black as the night and spiced according to an ancient secret recipe Black Barrel’s character and color lives completely up to its name. 

Nose:
Mocha, walnuts, burnt figs and lightly burnt notes of oak
Palette: 
Christmas spices and dark chocolate unite in a deep, rich taste.
Finish:
The mocha taste returns and tones out gradually

In June 1838, the Danish Government officially appointed Albert Heinrich Riise as the exclusive pharmacist for the island of Saint Thomas, in the Caribbean, and granted him monopoly status to produce alcohol in his pharmacy. Initially, Albert developed rum and bitters as medicine for stomach ills. However, his rum soon gained in popularity beyond its medical function, and in 1893 The A.H. Riise Company received its first international recognition at the World Exhibition in Chicago.

Today A.H. Riise is history distilled. In every bottle and every drop. Every bottle is a celebration of the accomplishments of the past – and a promise of new adventures.

To understand the world of Ron Abuelo, you have to step into Pesé, our luscious and fertile landscape, full of tradition and history. With temperatures ranging from 25ºC to 32ºC and humidity between 75% and 100%, the Pesé Valley is the ideal place for growing our sugarcane. We harvest over 1,600 hectares a year, fermenting both sugarcane juice and molasses for 48 hours using the “Pineapple” yeast to achieve the perfect profiles for our rums. 

“Ron Abuelo 12 Años” is an exquisitely rounded rum with timeless quality, and 12 years of exceptional character. Aged first in white oak barrels hand selected by Ron Abuelo’s coopers, the alcoholic strength is then masterfully reduced in cask for a refined flavour with a distinctive depth. This profound and dark amber Gran Reserva boasts an aroma with notes of cocoa, dried prune, toasted wood, and nuts.

February’s Surprise Box of Craft Rum Featuring J. Gow Revenge Rum

Probably the smallest rum producing island in the world

J. Gow rum is named after Orkneys very own 18th century pirate John Gow. J. Gow Rum distillery sits metres away from the sea on Lamb Holm, a 0.15 square mile uninhabited island. Which makes it probably the smallest rum producing island in the world. John Gow’s short, violent career began in Amsterdam in the Netherlands and ended in Orkney. He was imprisoned, tried and hanged. Not once, but twice, (after the rope snapped the first time) at London’s execution dock on the 11th of June 1725. He was one of the last pirates hanged in London. 
After re-joining the family business in 2013. Collin worked several years for the Orkney Wine Company (making fruit wines). With his dad ultimately priming him to take over the business. Instead of taking over the business he took over half of the building, installed a 2000L pot still and started making rum in 2017. 
Revenge is a 3 year old pure single Scottish rum, launched in April 2021. Aged in ex-bourbon and virgin oak casks for three years. 
J. Gow Rum’s house style is heavy and full-bodied, and Revenge is no exception. Light funk, acidic fruit and caramel on the nose. Stone fruit, spice and toffee on the palate with over ripe peaches on the finish. A rich and deeply flavoured rum with no added sugar, artificial flavours or colourings.

February’s Surprise Box of Spiced Rum Featuring Sugar House Scotch Bonnet Spiced Rum

Infused with tropical fruits and Scotch Bonnet Pepper for that extra kick

Sugar House rum takes inspiration for its name from the original 17th Century rum producers of Scotland, the Glasgow Sugar Houses. There were four Sugar Houses in total that refined the imported sugar from the West Indies to sell to local merchants. They also figured out that they could make use of the molasses by-product from the sugar refining process to make rum, so there was rum being made in Scotland as far back as 1676!
Sugar House rum is produced at Strathleven Distillery, which is located in Dumbarton, not far outside of Glasgow.
Their rum is made from scratch using a premium grade of cane molasses, distiller’s yeast, Scottish water and their own blend of nutrients. Sugar House’s third addition to their line-up is a Scotch Bonnet spiced rum which again uses the same base but at 47% is infused with tropical fruits and Scotch Bonnet Chilli’s for that extra kick.
