July’s Surprise Box of Spiced Rum Featuring Lost Years Gold Spiced Rum

Lost Years Rum, great rum, doing good

We are a small family business who knows the importance of supporting causes that we believe in and we actively seek out brands who work with amazing charities and care for our environment. We all have great childhood memories of family days out to the countryside and beach where we played for hours or seeing amazing animals that we’d only seen in books. We now share those experiences with our children and want our children to do the same with their children. This month we are delighted to share the Lost Years Gold Spiced Rum with you. The founders at Lost Years have teamed up with SEE Turtle, a charity running local community-based programs in the Global South to protect the endangered sea turtle species. Every sale of a bottle of Lost Years Rum generates a donation to this worthy cause.

Husband and wife, Lee and Trudy came up with the idea to team their love of rum with saving the sea turtles on a family holiday in Jamaica four years ago. In just one year, this small spirits brand with a big purpose saw their dream become a reality – sourcing incredible rums from some of the region’s most revered distilleries and partnering with US-based charity SEE Turtles to ensure every penny raised makes a difference. Their commitment to the environment doesn’t stop there, they also use 100% plastic packaging and a light-based bottle to help reduce carbon emissions.

The Lost Years Gold Spiced Rum With Queen Pineapple

While the lead flavour is clearly pineapple, this is much more than a pineapple flavoured rum!  The Lost Years team have created something genuinely multifaceted with waves of tropical fruits, including oranges, limes and coconut and exotic spices including cardamon, nutmeg and ginger.  Made with barrel aged rums and infused with juicy queen pineapples, it’s a flavour sensation!

Extremely versatile, it works well with simple mixer serves, in Tiki style cocktails and rum-based classics, or simply on its own over ice.

July’s Surprise Box of Craft Rum Featuring IslandSlice Single Dark Rum

IslandSlice, where rum and fun collide

Having a craft or skill is a special thing to be cherished, without it we wouldn’t have works of art like the Mona Lisa, incredible engineered structures like the Clifton Suspension Bridge and beautiful places like Kew Gardens to while away sunny afternoons with family and friends. Rum is no exception, master distillers use science, artistry, knowledge, and their senses & passion to create a delicious rum and we are excited to share IslandSlice Single Dark Rum with you.

Meet Sylvester Herman, founder of IslandSlice, a fourth-generation rum distiller from St Lucia whose passion for his craft brought him to the shores of Scotland. Rum is his passion, and his family has been involved in its production for generations. Rum was pioneered by plantation workers, they found that it numbed the pain of whippings and helped see them through the constant heat of the blazing Caribbean sun. IslandSlice rum is produced from scratch using the ingredients, techniques and processes passed down from Sylvester’s ancestors.

More recently Sylvester has joined forces with Dwight Jones, founder of RumTheShow.com, to create Island Brother Consulting. Dwight is a rum expert and a Rummelier® of the Royal Rum Society and he has been providing private rum tasting experiences, masterclasses and cocktail making experiences that you can enjoy in person at home or virtually. Together they will be producing rums that capture the essence of this playful spirit and pay homage to its rich heritage.

IslandSlice Singe Dark Rum

IslandSlice proudly offers an enticing laid-back dark rum, an embodiment of indulgence and sophistication. The Dark Rum offers a Toffee nose and taste, aged cedar humidor notes on the palate, smooth creaminess with a warm finish. Well balanced influence of specially selected Speyside whisky

June’s Surprise Box of Spiced Rum Featuring Marshall & Brown Dark Rum

Marshall & Brown, purveyors of fine Jamaican fayre

We learn so much from our parents, from right and wrong to developing the skills and ability to lead fulfilling lives. Our family values and rituals are at the heart of what we do and at Marshall & Brown they pay homage to two wonderful matriarchs, Eugenia Marshall & Olive Brown who passed on their appreciation of fine rum to Marvely Marshall and Carlton Brown. We are thrilled share Marshall & Brown Dark Rum with you this month.

Marvely & Carlton, the husband-and-wife duo behind the Marshall & Brown brand, travelled the world to discover some of the world’s finest rums. On their travels they gained a deeper understanding of the techniques, processes, sugars, molasses, fruits, and spices that go into making rum.  Their newfound knowledge and insight ignited a desire to create an exquisite range of artisan rums. They teamed up with Artisan distiller, Dominic M’Benga, who has taken their vision and expertly distilled their range of premium spiced rums.

Marshall & Brown Dark Rum

Marshall & Brown Dark Rum is a blend of Caribbean rums that has been re-distilled with a complex combination of our secret recipe of botanicals, including tonka beans to give a vanilla hit. It boasts a rich blend of flavours, with notes of molasses, tonka bean, caramel, and exotic fruits coming together in a harmonious complexity. Diablesse Rum

April’s Surprise Box of Spiced Rum Featuring Diablesse Coconut & Hibiscus Rum

Diablesse Coconut & Hibiscus Rum is one of a kind!

Diablesse Rum is the first female owned rum brand in the UK, already boasting multi-international awards. The brand is female forward unlike the majority of masculine brands on the market. Every bottle features the Caribbean legend of Diablesse, a legendary temptress and symbol of female empowerment. Diablesse prides itself on its unique blends and innovative ‘world’s first’ flavours plus exciting cocktails that challenge the way rum is traditionally perceived.

Diablesse Coconut & Hibiscus Rum is the latest in the Diablesse trilogy, this rum is totally unique and highly distinctive. The only one of its kind in the world, this single origin, demerara rum is flavoured 100% naturally with coconut, hibiscus & frangipane, the hibiscus giving it it’s beautiful pink colour. With notes of toasted coconut and dried cherries finishing with delicious frangipane this is great over ice or add pineapple & almond flavours (Franklins Pineapple & Almond soda is perfect) or a splash or cherry soda, also great with cherry cola. We love it in a Frose Daiquiri or coconut negroni!

Plantation OFTD Rum

April’s Surprise Box of Craft Rum Featuring Plantation OFTD Rum

Oh *!*?* That’s Delicious!

Plantation OFTD rum is Plantation Rum’s take on that classic style of overproof rums. Alexandre Gabriel wanted to take overproof rum to a new level and go back to its roots in Tiki Cocktails. Each chosen for their characteristics.

Powerful and full of character, OFTD is a great base spirit for your cocktails.

Plantation Rum

March’s Surprise Box of Spiced Rum Featuring Plantation Rum Stiggins’ Fancy Smoky Formula

A pineapple delicacy with a whisper of Irish peat

Stiggins’ Fancy Pineapple Rum is a perfect example of Plantation Rum Master Blender Alexandre Gabriel’s passion for experimentation. He wanted to develop a unique expression to offer as one-time gifts to partners in the spirits trade, and teamed up with famed cocktail historian David Wondrich to create an artisanal pineapple-infused rum. The end result was so irresistible that it has become a staple in the Plantation Rum range and winner of numerous rum awards. The name is a tribute to the character created by Charles Dickens in the Pickwick Papers, Reverend Stiggins, whose favorite tipple was “pineapple rum” (hidden in a tea cup).

Hand-peeled rinds of Victoria pineapples are infused in Plantation 3 Stars white rum, which is then further distilled in traditional copper pot stills. The pineapple fruit is separately infused in Plantation Original Dark rum, and the two are blended to create a lush bouquet of tropical fruit and warm spicy notes. Daiquiri and Mai Tai lovers, rejoice! You can find out more in this months edition of Rumspiration.

TASTING NOTES
A rich and delicious bouquet, accented by smoky notes and aromas of tropical fruit, pineapple, citrus peel, a touch of clove and hint of dry peat. The palate opens with a structured, pleasant sensation of ripe banana, pineapple, and spices layered in a distinctive smoky finish.

Goldstone Amber Rum

March’s Surprise Box of Craft Rum Featuring Goldstone Amber Rum

A proper British Scratch Rum

Goldstone Amber Rum from the Goldstone Rum Distillery is a brand new scratch rum distillery that had its first batch ready for tasting in December 2022. In that short amount of time it has made a big impression in the drinks industry. Located in Henfield Sussex, this family-run company is co-founded by John and Georgina Bowell. They believe if you’re going to do something, then make it the best it can be, and they’ve taken that approach with their rum.

John and Georgina Bowell have spent months researching and developing recipes to achieve the perfect taste and are advocates of sourcing materials and ingredients through local companies for their Goldstone distillery.

Goldstone Amber Rum is made by fermenting a blend of fresh sugar cane juice, jaggery, panela and molasses, a recipe not seen before in rum, which gives it a distinctive flavour. Something for which they have been given much praise from industry experts.

Their four sugars have each been chosen for their particular characteristics; fresh sugar cane juice is added to the fermentation within hours of being pressed to maintain optimum freshness – it adds notes of baked banana. Jaggery, a solid sugar from India which gives the rum a subtle caramel hint. Panela, an unrefined whole cane sugar from South America, adds richness, and molasses gives the rum its spicy rich flavour. To give it its amber colour a small amount of caramel has been added to the spirit just before bottling. You can find out more in this months edition of Rumspiration.

TASTING NOTES
Their classic white rum is the base for their rums including Goldstone Amber. The Amber rum is an unaged, unfiltered white with a touch of caramel for colouring. This lends a slight sweetness on the back end, whilst the forward notes bring grassy, tropical fruits and baked banana leaves. The Amber continues to grow on the palate after some time, bringing hints of hazelnut and liquorice. Goldstone ferment using a new yeast strain which has allowed them to create a complex and smooth rum like no other.

Bone Idyll Botanical Rum

February’s Surprise Box of Spiced Rum Featuring Bone Idyll Botanical Rum

Craft By Day, Hustle By Night

Bone Idyll Botanical Rum is produced by Bone Idyll, a new spirits brand from successful Surrey restauranteurs, bartenders and all-round hospitality hot-shots Sam and Alex Berry. With the backing of the local community, Bone Idyll Distillery and Cocktail Bar opened its doors June 2022 in Kingston-upon-Thames. Describing themselves as “city meets country, old meets new” and have a real focus on balance; the same goes for their rum. They start off with a delicious base rum, this is their aged rum blend which they also bottle and sell. It’s a three-island blend from Barbados, Guyana, and the Dominican Republic, aged up to 8 years and averaging out at 5. Described as balance in a bottle, it is a perfect mix of pot still and column still. Pot still distillation is where big bold flavours are born, whereas column distillation produces much lighter and more subtle, but equally delicious spirits.

But this is just the delicious base for the star of the show, Bone Idyll Botanical Rum. The base rum is re-distilled with scotch bonnet chillies, banana and lime leaf. When it comes out the still, it comes out clear so to return the colour, more of the aged rum blend is added along with water to dilute; that’s it, nothing more nothing less. You can find out more in this months edition of Rumspiration.

TASTING NOTES
Immediately on the palate and the nose is that fresh pepper flavour; green, fresh, and vegetal the rum really starts off bright. Just before that starts to get too savoury, the banana comes in to save the day with fruity sweetness, the lime leaf finishes things off at the end with a touch of earthy citrus. All throughout and constantly underlying those flavours are all the beautiful balanced flavours of the three-island base rum blend.
