Flamboyant Vieux Rhum
In February’s surprise box of rum and continuing to explore agricole rhums, we have sourced a unique product from Mauritius – Flamboyant Vieux Rhum. This blended rum is aged for up to seven years in used Bourbon oak casks. Golden in colour due to oak maturation, the rum has no artificially added colours. This is a fantastic sipping rum with a big, smooth, well-rounded nose and palate. Unfortunately, there is no promotional material available from the distillery, but we think it speaks for itself. On the front of the bottle is a picture of the tree ‘Flamboyant’ whose flower is the national flower of Mauritius. Flamboyant comes into flower during the time of independence in March when the trees lining the sides of the roads in great avenues are ablaze with brilliant red colour.
Mauritius is a relative newcomer to global rum markets. For centuries, colonial governments in Mauritius frowned on using sugar cane for rum, because refined sugar fetched much better profits. Until 2006, Mauritius produced only small amounts of rum from molasses. The government then lifted a ban on distilling from sugar cane juice to produce agricole rum. The lifting of the ban has brought in new players, and encouraged older operations to diversify.

The Expressions
Flamboyant Vieux Rhum is a golden yellow with a bright clear appearance. On the nose you can pick out complex notes such as biscuit, cake, raisin, banana cake, vanilla, cinnamon and a touch of orange zest. Tasting the Rhum leaves you with a dry sense with a subtle touch of burnt fruit, raisin and almost a coffee note.
Flamboyant Rhum brings a small touch of Mauritian life to the UK. Mix with crushed ice and Pearona to taste in a highball glass and experience the local drink of choice.
